Description
INVALSI assessments have been at the center of the educational debate for years. The use of standardized assessments, such as those developed by INVALSI, fits within the broader analysis of European education systems, with which it is necessary to engage in the context of educational policy at the European level. The results of these tests are also crucial for the Ministry of Education and Merit to assess the overall learning outcomes and preparation levels of Italian students on a macro scale. This information helps guide decisions about where and how to implement improvement measures. It is important to stress, however, that standardized testing is not intended to replace teachers’ assessments of students, but rather to complement them — for example, by contributing to the development of the competence certification issued at the end of both the first and second cycles of education. Moreover, INVALSI tests are part of the broader system evaluation process, which aims to provide the public with accessible and transparent information on key aspects of the education system and to offer policymakers and institutions objective data to assess the state of education and training for young people in Italy. In addition to fulfilling this function, the tests can become a powerful tool in the hands of teachers and researchers — a resource that supports and enhances the exploration of teaching practices. This volume gathers six chapters based on contributions presented during the 6th Seminar "INVALSI Data: A Tool for Research and Teaching" (Rome, 25–28 November, 2021). Each chapter provides practical examples of how standardized assessments can support and enrich the work of schools.
